SERAC-Bangladesh Executive Director SM Shaikat was invited to present the Bangladesh National Youth Conference on Family Planning at the 10th Asia Pacific Conference on Reproductive, Sexual Health & Rights (APCRSHR) and how a youth led event turned into a sustainable platform for SRHR advocacy and accountability. The session took placed on August 3rd at 1.00pm Bangkok time and SM Shaikat shared the panel with Nalini Khurana from International Center for Research on Women – Asia, Nicole Banister from Grassroot Soccer’s play-based approach in Papua New Guinea, and Shiang Cheng Lim from Overprotected and Underserved, Malaysia. While the plenary speaker was Vu Tran Dung, Vice Chair of Youth LEAD and Heidrun Fritze, Technical Analyst, Adolescents and Youth UNFPA Asia and the Pacific in the chair.
Shaikat presented a detailed documentation on the past four years success stories of the signature event of SERAC, BNYCFP and how it started, and continued annually over the period. He said, it was young people’s vision of a sustainable and safe space for themselves. The conference has connected over a thousand youth leaders from across the country and this year it will go virtual to engage international speakers and experts by converting the challenge of COVID19 into an opportunity.
