On the occasion of International Plastic Bag Free Day, the Youth Coalition for Climate Justice (YCCJ), with support from SERAC-Bangladesh, organized a landmark commitment-signing ceremony, bringing together youth-led organizations to collectively pledge their commitment to a Plastic-Free & Zero-Waste future, alongside Teens Saver Bangladesh, Nirjon Foundation Bangladesh, Red Love Society, OAB Foundation, Right to Peace Foundation (R2P), Youth Movements, Sustainers NEST, Vatara Adolescents and Youth Club, Soul Synapwell, YEDO, Gafargaon Helpline, Muktotori, Youth for Uplift Bangladesh, and Montorongo.
The initiative marks a significant step toward strengthening youth leadership in climate action by encouraging organizations to institutionalize environmentally responsible practices and reduce plastic pollution through sustainable event management and organizational operations.
Plastic pollution remains one of the most pressing environmental challenges facing Bangladesh. The widespread use of single-use plastics continues to pollute rivers and oceans, clog urban drainage systems, contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, and threaten biodiversity and public health. Recognizing the urgency of the issue, YCCJ launched the Plastic-Free & Zero-Waste Commitment to inspire youth organizations to lead by example and adopt sustainable practices within their institutions and communities.
Through the voluntary commitment, participating organizations pledged to organize plastic-free events whenever operationally feasible, eliminate the use of single-use plastics, implement zero-waste management systems, prioritize sustainable procurement, and promote responsible environmental practices among staff, volunteers, partners, and event participants. Organizations also committed to raising awareness about plastic pollution, the circular economy, and sustainable lifestyles while collaborating with fellow youth networks to strengthen Bangladesh’s growing climate movement.
The event itself reflected these principles by implementing sustainable practices, including encouraging participants to bring reusable water bottles, minimizing printed materials through digital documentation, promoting eco-friendly catering, and establishing waste segregation systems throughout the venue.
Speaking on the occasion, S M Shaikat, Executive Director of SERAC-Bangladesh and the Founder of YCCJ, emphasized that
“Meaningful climate action begins with institutional accountability and everyday choices. Youth organizations have the power to influence communities and inspire lasting behavioral change. By committing to plastic-free and zero-waste practices, we are not only reducing our environmental footprint but also setting a standard for responsible climate leadership across Bangladesh.”
The commitment will remain in effect for an initial period of two years, serving as a foundation for integrating long-term sustainability policies into participating organizations’ governance and operations. The initiative also aims to expand collaboration among youth organizations and establish a nationwide network committed to advancing environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
The organizers expressed their appreciation to all participating organizations for demonstrating their shared commitment to protecting the environment and called upon more institutions, youth groups, educational institutions, and civil society organizations to join the movement toward a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Bangladesh.
Together, this collective commitment reinforces the belief that lasting climate solutions require collaboration, accountability, and action. By reducing plastic pollution and embracing zero-waste principles, Bangladesh’s youth are taking meaningful steps toward building a healthier environment and a more sustainable future for generations to come.
