Empowering Youth Against Gender-Based Violence Through the 16 Days of Activism

In the spirit of the global campaign against gender-based violence (GBV), the 16 Days of Activism, SERAC-Bangladesh along with Ipas Bangladesh, under the Improving SRHR in Dhaka project, organized a series of impactful school campaigns across 10 institutions, reaching 630 students. These interactive sessions were collaborative, led by youth mentors, supported by enthusiastic youth volunteers, and guided by SBCC officers.

The campaign centered on raising awareness about gender-based violence and the significance of the 16 Days of Activism. These sessions tackled critical issues such as reproductive coercion and the broader spectrum of GBV, equipping young minds with the knowledge and tools to advocate for a violence-free future.

The sessions featured insights from general practitioners who joined the campaign to shed light on GBV, particularly focusing on reproductive coercion. They emphasized the importance of understanding personal boundaries, respectful relationships, and access to reproductive healthcare as fundamental rights.

Youth-Led Change

Youth mentors played a vital role in creating an open and engaging discussion environment. Supported by youth volunteers, they ensured that the content was relatable and relevant for the students, fostering a culture of understanding and solidarity. Their passion and dedication highlighted the importance of youth leadership in tackling social challenges, proving that young voices are powerful agents of change. The campaign’s success was evident in the active participation of the students, who asked insightful questions and shared their thoughts about GBV. The sessions not only raised awareness but also empowered these young individuals to stand against violence in their communities.

As we continue to champion the fight against GBV, initiatives like these school campaigns demonstrate the power of collaboration between youth, educators, healthcare professionals, and community leaders. By fostering awareness and dialogue, we are taking significant strides toward a society where everyone can live free from violence. The 16 Days of Activism serves as a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility we all share in eradicating gender-based violence. Together, we can build a future rooted in equality, respect, and safety for all.
