“Despite demographic imperatives and compelling demand for health services, adolescents in Bangladesh face challenges in accessing sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) education and services. Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) is crucial for addressing these issues and promoting the overall well-being of individuals.”

According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS, 2015), the adolescent population in Bangladesh stands at 36 million, representing over one-fifth of the country’s total population. Despite this significant demographic, access to sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHR) education and services remains limited. The contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) has increased steadily over the years, yet challenges persist in accessing SRHR services, highlighting the need for comprehensive approaches like Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE).

This research brief highlights the importance of Comprehensive Sexuality Education in addressing adolescent sexual and reproductive health rights issues in Bangladesh. Through effective implementation and addressing challenges, adolescents can access the necessary education and services to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. It aims to empower youth to attain improved mental, social, and physical health by addressing fundamental topics such as diversity, SRHR, and gender equality. However, challenges persist in delivering CSE due to social, cultural, and religious barriers, as well as inadequate training and resources for educators.

In a nutshell, strengthening the delivery of Comprehensive Sexuality Education is essential for promoting adolescent sexual and reproductive health rights in Bangladesh. Addressing challenges and implementing recommended strategies can help overcome barriers and improve access to comprehensive SRHR education and services for adolescents, ensuring their well-being and dignity in the community.
