Youth Speak Out on Health and Climate Challenges in Noakhali

In one of Bangladesh’s most climate-vulnerable coastal districts, young people recently came together to discuss how climate change is affecting their access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services. A day-long policy dialogue workshop provided a platform for coastal and marginalized youth to share their experiences and advocate for inclusive health policies.

The workshop was organized by SERAC-Bangladesh under the Youth Catalyst project, with support from UNFPA Bangladesh and funding from Sida. The forum brought together 32 youth representatives from Noakhali’s coastal and marginalized communities. Participants reported that frequent cyclones, tidal surges, riverbank erosion, distant health centers, transportation challenges, and poverty have long limited their access to SRHR services. Many emphasized that these barriers prevent them from receiving urgent health care when they need it most.

The event began with a welcome address from MD. Salim Mia, Deputy Director (Program), SERAC-Bangladesh, followed by an overview of the project shared by Mizanur Rahman Akand, Advocacy Specialist, SERAC-Bangladesh. The workshop was presided over by Iftikhar Ahmed Chowdhury, Deputy Director, Noakhali District Family Planning Office. Special guests included Kamrun Nahar, Deputy Director, Department of Women Affairs, Noakhali, and Dr. Jannatur Naim Keya, Medical Officer, Noakhali Civil Surgeon Office.

“Young people should never feel hesitant to seek SRHR services. It is important to report barriers caused by climate change, and policy makers will take steps based on youth feedback,” said Iftikhar Ahmed Chowdhury, Deputy Director, Noakhali District Family Planning Office.

Youth participants engaged in structured questionnaires and group discussions to highlight the challenges they face in accessing health services. Experts then analyzed these insights to formulate relevant policy recommendations aimed at improving SRHR access for climate-affected youth.

Other key attendees included SERAC-Bangladesh Innovation & Youth Specialist Md. Nazmul Hasan, Finance & Admin Officer Rabeya Akter Munmun, and Communication Officer, Enamul Haque.
