Late graduation

SERAC-Bangladesh Executive Director, SM Shaikat, recently wrote an insightful op-ed for the Dhaka Tribune, highlighting the challenges Bangladesh faces as it prepares to graduate from the UN’s Least Developed Country (LDC) category in November 2026.

While meeting the LDC thresholds in income, human assets, and vulnerability is a significant achievement, SM Shaikat emphasizes that graduation is not just a medal ceremony—it is a stress test for the country’s economy, institutions, and society.

The op-ed urges policymakers to strengthen social safety nets, support SMEs, and invest in inclusive growth, ensuring that the benefits of graduation reach all citizens, especially young people and vulnerable communities.

SM Shaikat concludes with a critical reminder:

“Graduation is not a medal ceremony — it is a stress test.”

As Bangladesh steps toward this milestone, the focus must remain on inclusive development and resilience, ensuring that no one is left behind.
