Youth Commit to Building a Tolerant Society

Today, on 15th November 2025, SERAC-Bangladesh, with support from CIVICUS, hosted an engaging Peace Adda in Dhaka to mark the International Day for Tolerance 2025. The event brought together young people from diverse backgrounds to openly discuss how tolerance, respect, and understanding serve as the cornerstone of a peaceful society in Bangladesh.

In a world where differences in opinion, identity, and belief often spark misunderstanding and division, this conversation was especially timely. The young participants emphasized several key elements essential for nurturing tolerance- not only in families and institutions but also within their daily lives and communities.

S M Shaikat, Executive Director of SERAC-Bangladesh, said, “Tolerance is the practice of respect, acceptance, and appreciation- values that move our diverse social reality forward.”

Key Insights from Youth at Peace Adda

One of the strongest messages that emerged was the urgent need to respect diverse perspectives. The youth recognized that disagreements and differing opinions are natural in any society, but they stressed that intolerance is a choice– one we must consciously avoid. Embracing diversity of thought broadens understanding and strengthens collective problem-solving capacity.

Central to fostering respect is the practice of positive and effective communication. Peaceful dialogue prevents conflicts, reduces misunderstandings, and creates meaningful spaces for conversation. Through clear, respectful communication, communities can bridge divides and build mutual trust.

Alongside communication, the youth highlighted the importance of consideration and empathy. Being mindful of the impact of our words and actions on others is key to social harmony. Values like adaptation, appreciation, and genuine consideration are foundational human qualities that sustain peace in everyday interactions.Equally vital is the art of active listening combined with objective thinking. Listening attentively and empathetically allows deeper connections that go beyond stereotypes and assumptions. Objective thinking encourages openness and fairness, fostering greater understanding.

Finally, the participants embraced their collective responsibility to reduce hate and division in society. They expressed firm commitment to counteract discrimination and social fragmentation by modeling tolerance and peaceful behavior within their communities. This responsibility is critical to creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels respected and valued.

A Collective Commitment to Peace

The Peace Adda was more than a conversation; it became a shared promise. The youth pledged to uphold tolerance, practice respectful behavior, engage in peaceful communication, and promote inclusion across all spheres of life. Building on this year’s theme, the young participants reaffirmed their ongoing commitment to continue these efforts every day- recognizing that tolerance is not just a one-time discussion, but a continuous practice and responsibility.

As the event concluded, it was clear that the seeds of a more tolerant society had been planted. These young voices remind us that peace begins with everyday actions, and a tolerant future is within reach when we choose empathy, respect, and understanding as our guiding principles.
