Every year about 6.4 million people or 4% of the total population of Bangladesh becoming poor due to expenses to treat killer diseases and most of them are affected by tobacco use. Hence to combat this epidemic, like other countries Bangladesh too needs a Health Promotion Foundation, Demanded by SERAC-Bangladesh and Bangladesh Anti Tobacco Alliance in the occasion of National No Tobacco Day on October 9, 2015 in Mymensingh. Speakers at the human chain said, Tobacco consumption has been reduced by collective efforts from Government, NGOs and Parliamentarians. However, the progress is not satisfactory enough. As a result millions of people are facing health hazards.
Pulak Kanti Roy (Assistant Director of SERAC-Bangladesh) quoted World Health organization as every year die and 3,82,000 people become paralyzed only for Tobacco related dieses. So, it is high time to address these issues through forming a Health Promotion Foundation.
Others including SERAC-Bangladesh?s program officer Mozammel Haque, Project Officer Barkat Ullah Bhuyan, College student Mijanur Rahman, Peyas, Suhel Businessman Mustofa, Eqbal Hossain has spoken at the event.
