Health is a human right and a cornerstone of sustainable development and global security. The World Health Organization?s constitution also affirms that the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is a fundamental human right. However in Bangladesh Constitution, health is referred as a basic human `need’ not confirmed clearly as a `fundamental right’ and therefore any violation of this right is not directly accessible in courts for remedy.
In solidarity with the Universal Health Coverage Day, UHC coalition member SERAC-Bangladesh along with 7 other health rights organizations organized a human chain in front of Dhaka University Fine Arts Institute in the capital on Thursday demanding affirmation of health as a basic human rights in Bangladesh constitution. SERAC-Bangladesh’s Program Coordinator Syed Mazarul Islam represented the organization? while attendees included Aminul Islam Sujon from WBB Trust, Rokeya Begum from Shasthya Andolon, Syed Mahbubul Alam from Work for a Better Bangladesh and Helal Ahmed from Protyasha vocalized the event.
