The Power of Options’: Celebration of World Contraception Day 2023

SERAC-Bangladesh with support from Ipas Bangladesh has celebrated World Contraception Day 2023 on 12-25 September with the theme ‘The Power of Options’ under Improving SRHR in Dhaka project in 56 areas of Dhaka North and South city corporations  including Nobodoy Bazar, Nobodoy kachabazar, Shyamoli Housing, Chandrima Housing, Shahjahan Road, Nurjahan Road, Kaderabad Housing, West Katasur, Chata Masjid-Mohammadpur, Shukrabad Dhanmondi, Abu Sayed Bazar, Kamrangirchar, Madartek, Sabujbag, Shahid Faruk Road, North Jatrabari-Dhalpur, Mir Hazirbag, Shonir Akhra, Bazarpara Gabtoli, Block-F Mirpur-2, Paikpara, Darus Salam, Pirerbag, Block-A and D Mirpur-12, Shewrapara, Rupnagar Tinshed Pallabi, Mohakhali – Korail TNT, Madrasa Market, IPH Masjid Market, Lalbag, West Vasantek, Bou Bazar, North Ibrahimpur, Kafrul, Meradiya, Gudaraghat-Khilgaon, Khilgaon Bazar, Uttara- Azompur Kachabazar, Joynal Market, Baunia, Ainusbag, Ashkona, Faydabad, Sector-12, Sector-11, Hazaribag- Borhanpur, Baddanagar, Gozmohol, Modina Chattor Matuail, Aga Sadek – Kazi Alauddin Road, Alu Bazar, North Shahjahanpur, South Banasree, Wasa Road Maniknagar, Basabo. Volunteers under this project named as ‘Projonon Shasthya Bondhu’ have organized 26 health camps and 30 human chains by engaging the general practitioners (GPs) and community people. Besides, they have shared information on family planning services and its importance provided by their nearby general practitioners (GP) of their designated areas. 

Volunteers have organized the events on their own and GPs have supported them in the health camps. have also shared their experience regarding this. ‘Projonon Shasthya Bondhu’ Israt Tanjin Athoy from Darus Salam Mirpur said, “Through my journey in this project I have got to learn many skills, and engaging the community is one of those. Our GP has supported us a lot in arranging the health camp which was very helpful for the community to know about their nearby Women Plus health facility.”

Golam Morshed, ‘Projonon Shasthya Bondhu’ of Kamrangirchar area said, “We work in such a community were talking about sexual and reproductive health services is still a taboo. Joining this project as a Projonon Shasthya Bondhu has helped me to overcome the stigma that I had and also motivated me to work for my community.” 

‘Projonon Sastho Bandhu’ Shirin Akter Nupur from North Shahjahanpur said, “As a volunteer of my community I shared the right information about contraceptive options and nearby health facilities where people can go for taking services. Doing something right always inspires me to do more good deeds as a part of my community.”

10 volunteers from each area have organized a human chain by engaging 10 community people and distributing Hand Pakha with a strong message about contraceptive methods. SERAC-Bangladesh’s Program Manager Tasnia Ahmed, SBCC Officers – Khadija Kalam, Md. Nazmul Hasan, Md. Shafiullah, Kakoli Akter, and Shahida Khatun have supported the overall activity.
